Aral-the dying sea
The Aral Sea is an inner sea in Central Asia. It lies between Kazakhstan in the north and Karakalpakstan an autonomous region of Uzbekistan to the south. Formerly one of the four largest lakes of the world, the Aral Sea has been steadily shrinking since the 1960s after the rivers that fed it were diverted by Soviet Union irrigation project. The Aral Sea is known as one of the most polluted areas in the world, because it was used for weapons testing and disposal of industrial waste.
